If you will excuse me? My name is James. I am your butler for libraries of any size. Are you searching for a programme to manage library users and lending operations? Do you esteem excellent service at a fair price? If so, we should meet. Thanks to my assistance you will save a lot of time and be able to work even more efficiently and to your entire satisfaction. You will like it. Here is what I can do for you:

... I take off the load of routine work.

Example: A user has missed the deadline to return a book. I calculate the fee for the overdraft and send a reminder to him. Three weeks after the beginning of the overdraft period, I provide you with an already filled order to pay. Print, sign and send it - that's all!

... I provide quick overviews.

Example 1: You need to know which of your books are ordered to be able to prepare the stacks for the various lendings. You may also need an overview to see which of the books are lent and up to when. Filter your available stocks using criteria like „ordered“, „lent“, „due“or „overdraft“.
Example 2: You want to know who has done what? You will find the last operations displayed under „Reports“. Your employees no longer need to record every single workstep.

I assist you with lending operations.

Example: You are lending books using card boxes. The database is still nearly empty. What now? Ask James if the shelfmark of the required book is available. If yes, lend it without prior order from the customer. If not, enter the book data and lend the book afterwards.

I take charge of security matters.

Example: As an administrator you need secure passwords. The passwords used within James are sufficiently long an consist of random character strings. They are encrypted and archived in the database and sent to the user only. Provided the user keeps his password secret, nobody except him will be able to access the account. Failure to enter the right password three times in succession, James locks the access for 24 hours.

I allow quick search operations.

Give me a keyword and I will display all associated titles listed by relevance.

I remind users to timely return books.

One week prior to and (if necessary) on the due date of return, I send a reminder to the user. They can easily prolong any lending from home using the internet.

I am easy to operate.

Your employees will soon get familiar with me. Also non-librarians can easily use the programme.

General Information

Who is James?

James is a programme designed to manage library users and lending operations through an online catalogue (WebOPAC, iOPAC). The software is suited for libraries of any size.

How does James work?

This is special with James: There is no need to perform any installation. The programme runs on a high-performance server located in a high-security center within the subsidiary of our provider. Your employees and users have online access to it using a browser.
This is the reason why James is for lease only and not for purchase. Your advantage is the following:

You save a lot of money compared to locally installable programmes you need to buy. James has only a few requirements: All you need for each of your employees is a computer with an operating system of your choice and access to the internet. There are no costs for expensive licences, servers, updates and backup software.

Entering books, ordering, lending, prolonging lendings, searching....all worksteps are performed directly online. This is why all modifications become immediately effective.

This is the advantage for the users: Not depending on opening hours, they can perform online searches, order books or prolong lendings conveniently from home.

How much is James?

The unrecurring set-up fee is 99 EUR.

In addition, there is a leasing fee including support service via phone and e-mail and updates.

What security measures are taken?

The costs for the security measures are included in the monthly fee and include the following:
Our provider is responsible for server service and database security. The servers are located in a high-security center within his subsidiary. The security center is protected against unauthorized access, flood, gas and electricity-related incidents. Our provider makes use of firewalls, virus scanning software and periodical updates and can thus guarantee a protection against downtimes of almost 100%.

How secure is the programme itself?

Operating James is secure, because…

If you have equipped your computer with a firewall, virus scanning and anti-spy software (partially available as freeware), the programme is fully secure.

What kind of preperations are required prior to using James?

Do you already have a database or do you work with a card box system? No matter –you can start right after the design and customer-specific properties are entered.

You can even lend books before having imported or entered your entire book data. Importing existing book data does not override the lending data.

Nonrecurring set-up fee: 99 EUR
+ leasing fee: 38.67 EUR

The leasing fee includes the following: Programme maintenance and update plus one database.

The size of the database is 100 MB. This corresponds to some 300,000 records.

Example: Assuming 50,000 books entered, 10,000 users and 20,000 lending operations per year, your database will be full after 12 years. Unless you regularly delete unnecessary data. (i.e. lendings older than five years).

You still need more database space? Simply lease one or two additional databases with 100 MB each. This enables you to ensure a capacity of 1.2 million records. This represents only 150 EUR in addition per database and year.

If you need more, choose Advanced or Enterprise.

Nonrecurring set-up fee: 99 EUR
+ leasing fee: 73.34 EUR

The leasing fee includes the following: Programme maintenance and update plus a 3.6 million records database.

Example: Assuming 50,000 books entered, 50,000 users and 50,000 lending operations per year, your database will be full after 70 years. Unless you regularly delete unnecessary data.

Even more capacity is included in Advanced II or Enterprise.

+ leasing fee: 110 EUR

The leasing fee includes the following: Programme maintenance and update plus a 10.8 million records database.

Example: Assuming 100,000 books entered, 100,000 users and 100,000 lending operations per year, your database will be full after 79 years. Unless you regularly delete unnecessary data.

Even more capacity is included in Enterprise.

Personal data and user privilege modifications within a leased version of „James –der Bibliotheks-Butler“are transmitted via secure SSL connections. Therefore, data access and data manipulation is nearly excluded.

General Procedures

During your visit on the DS-Software-Lösungen websites, the following information is collected: Our webservers store information as to what browser and operating system you are using, the name of your internet service provider, your computer's IP address as well as the date and time of your visit on the website. At any time this data can be related to a specific person. This information cannot be associated with your personal data.

We do not use any other techniques of data collection, such as cookies.

This does not apply to attempts to bypass security measures within „James –der Bibliotheks-Butler“. In such a case information will be collected enabling us to identify the computer hacker.

The same is true for hack attempts into customer-leased software versions. Our customers are protected twice: We lock such user accounts and transmit the related user data to the competent legal authorities.

Data Security

DS-Software-Lösungen uses technical and organisational security measures in order to protect your data managed by us against incidental or intentional manipulation, loss, destruction or unauthorized access. These security measures are constantly optimized in accordance with technical progress.

DS-Software-Lösungen must disclaim any liability for the data transmission process via the internet.
